NY State Warns Against Cyber Monday Fraud

Today is Cyber Monday, which is really just the online version of Black Friday so we can all sit at work or home and get the same great deals without waiting on line with an angry mob of holiday shoppers. As wonderful as Cyber Monday is, it is also the perfect place for credit card scams and other forms of fraud. Unfortunately, the holiday shopping season shows an increase in the number of fraud reports submitted. Fraud is a very serious crime. It encompasses a wide array of crimes and can fall under the category of theft.  Some forms of fraud include the following:

  • Identity theft
  • Insurance fraud
  • Immigrant assistant services fraud
  • Skimmer devices
  • Credit card theft
  • False advertising
  • False impersonation of law enforcement or the armed forces
  • Bad checks
  • Criminal impersonation

These are very serious offenses, some of which are even felonies. For example, a person who is charged with “criminal usury in the first degree” will be facing a class C felony. Many retail scams involve the theft of another person’s credit card information through card skimmers or simply stealing another’s card. If you have been charged with any sort of fraud, it is important that you retain the services of an experienced criminal defense attorney as soon as possible.
