Currently, if you are someone who is looking to travel on a plane, you must produce proof of your identity. In most cases, a simple driver’s license or passport will suffice, however, as of 2019, it was announced a simple driver’s license or passport is no longer sufficient proof of identification. The government announced that, as of October 2020, all potential travelers are required to have a Real ID to be allowed past airport security. That being said, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the deadline for acquiring Real IDs has been pushed back to the Fall of 2021. Continue reading and speak with our Rockland County traffic violations attorney to learn more about the IDs and what it may mean for you.
Why do I need a Real ID?
The REAL ID Act was created in 2005 after the 9/11 terrorist attacks to establish a minimum security standard for all state-issued driver’s licenses. Officials are prohibited from accepting such identification if it does not meet those security standards. Without identification that meets those standards, individuals cannot travel out of the country, they cannot visit certain federal facilities, such as nuclear power plants, and more. The being said, the Real ID can be equated with an upgraded driver’s license, so to speak.
How do I obtain a Real ID?
Without a Real ID, you will no longer be able to fly once the fall of 2021 comes around. This is why you should consider obtaining one now. The local DMV should provide you with a Real ID, as long as you bring the following documentation to your appointment::
- Your full legal name
- Two proofs of the address of your principal residence
- Your lawful status
- Your date of birth
- Your social security number
That being said, if you are curious whether you already have a Real ID, all you have to do is look at the back of your driver’s license. If you see a gold or black star on the top right corner, you have a Real ID.
