Over Memorial Day Weekend, New York law enforcement took part in the STOP-DWI traffic campaign that aimed to enforce driving while intoxicated laws throughout the holiday weekend. Memorial Day weekend has some of the highest rates of drunk drivers than there is at any other point during the year. There were a number of sobriety checkpoints set up by local and state police to make sure drivers were not intoxicated.
Over the course of the weekend, there were 237 DWI arrests made. Law enforcement also targeted drivers who were speeding, texting and driving, and failing to wear their seatbelts. 41 people in the Lower Hudson Valley alone were arrested for DWI’s and 1,150 tickets for other driving infractions. Throughout the rest of New York State, there were 3,5999 speeding tickets issued, 290 distracted driving tickets, 2,312 seatbelt violations issued, and finally, 218 drivers were ticketed for failure to move over for an emergency vehicle.
Be aware that New York State Police plans to continue cracking down on drunk drivers and others who violate the rules of the road. If you were one of the people arrested for driving while intoxicated over the holiday weekend, it is important that you retain the services of an experienced criminal defense attorney who can provide you with assistance.
