NYC Crime Levels Hit Low Point

New statistics were released at the end of 2017 that indicate the overall crime rates in New York City have fallen to rates as low as they were in the 1950’s. In fact, the rates of crime for each major felony have dropped significantly. The New York Times found that major felonies dropped from 101,716 to 94,806 over the course of just one year. In comparison, there were over 527,000 major felony crimes in 1990, which included 2,245 murders. The “major felonies” include crimes such as manslaughter, assault, rape, burglary, robbery, car thefts, and grand larceny. However, there has been a 12 percent increase in rape reports at the end of 2017, which could be credited to the anti-sexual assault movement that has been empowering victims across the country to speak up.

There are many factors that contribute to the declining crime rates that may include better law enforcement policy and even economic conditions such as interest rates and unemployment. The NYPD had been using stun guns more often in 2017 than their other firearms, in comparison with 2016’s numbers. The lower rates of killings have not only presented themselves in New York City, but also in other major cities such as Chicago and Detroit.
