Fines for running a red light

The fine schedule for running a red light can change depending on whether the ticket was issued inside New York City or outside New York City. If the ticket is issued outside of New York City, the minimum fine is $75. However, that minimum fine doubles to $150 if it is issued inside New York City. In addition, the court is required to impose a mandatory surcharge of between $88 and $93 depending on the court.

It is important to recognize two things about red light tickets. First, depending on your driving record, it is possible for the fine to cost up to $1,500. Additionally, running a red light carries three points on your driver’s license, which can be significant depending on the number of points you already have, as well as your driving record. Before you do anything with a red light ticket, speak to an experienced attorney who is familiar with traffic tickets in New York.
