New York Joins Interstate Coalition on Gun Violence

After the most recent mass school shooting in Parkland, Florida, governors from four northeastern states have announced a coalition to combat gun violence. The “States for Gun Safety” coalition consists of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Governors from the states involved in this coalition plan to pool their resources in an effort to increase research, law enforcement, and intel on potential gun violence threats. In addition, they aim to stop guns from illegally being bought and sold on the black market.

While New York already has some of the strictest gun laws in the country, closely followed by New Jersey, the governors feel as though they need to do more on the state level instead of waiting for the federal government to take action. It is easier for state legislation to pass laws on gun safety than it is for the federal government to do so because federal lawmakers often have very polarizing views on the matter.

It will be interesting to see whether New York State takes additional steps to make firearm access more difficult and what else the coalition plans to do in the future.
