2017 Speed Week Results

Earlier this month, New York State Police conducted its annual Speed Week campaign that aimed to crack down on those who violate the rules of the road. The campaign, which ran from June 7-June 13, resulted in 21,864 tickets for traffic violations. The breakdown for tickets per violation is as follows:

  • Speeding: 9,456 drivers
  • Driving While Intoxicated: 268 drivers
  • Move Over Law: 383 drivers
  • Distracted Driving: 695 drivers
  • Seatbelt Violations: 1,346 drivers

The Lower Hudson Valley resulted in a total of 2,254 tickets, the majority of which were for speeding (953), followed by 102 violations of children not wearing seatbelts or having proper restraints. During the Speed Week campaign, New York State Police also responded to 315 personal injury accidents that caused 412 people to become injured.

The summer months have some of the most dangerous driving and also the highest amount of police presence. Of course, your best bet it to drive safely and most importantly, sober. Be aware that with July 4th coming up, there will be plenty of law enforcement lining the roads looking for drivers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. There may also be an increase in the number of DWI checkpoints. If you are drinking alcohol over July 4th weekend, do so responsibly.

New York State is allowing Uber and Lyft to legally operate starting June 29, 2017, just in time for the holiday weekend so there will be plenty of ways to safely get to your destination and avoid driving under the influence, which can result in hefty fines, license suspension, and jail time. If you are arrested for a DUI, contact an experienced criminal defense and traffic violations attorney today.
